Advent The Once and Future Coming of Jesus Christ Fleming Rutledge 9780802876195 Books Reviews

  • Fleming Rutledge's collections of sermons is life-changing, as was her book Crucifixion. The sermons are much easier to consume, as they are (obviously) shorter and divided into categories for easy reading. The substance, however, is just as profound as her other works. I have a new appreciation for Advent and will never say "Christ has died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again" without stopping to really think about what that means.
  • Excellent book of sermons from Rutledge on the weeks before and including Advent.
  • I felt a sinking feeling when I saw the size. But it has been such a great resource. Beyond compare as an Advent companion!
  • Amazing book
  • What comes to your mind when you hear the word Advent? The Baby Jesus, shepherds, wise men, Peace on Earth, hope, light, sentiment and nostalgia? Fleming Rutledge’s take on Advent focuses on pain, hopelessness, darkness, suffering, repentance and the absence of God. Advent is the season of preparation for Christ’s return, but Advent begins in the dark. It begins with the fiery preaching of John, calling sinners to repentance. It’s about judgment that leads to liberation. Peace on Earth is yet to come. The Messiah will make war to make peace. Advent is not our journey to God but His journey to us. What drives much of this doctrinal emphasis is an Episcopal adherence to the Lectionary and a tradition that delays the familiar trappings of Christmas. I’m tempted to call this perspective non-traditional, but it is only non-traditional to my tradition.

Advent is a collection of writings, sermons, essays and addresses on a variety of occasions, and while I read it through, the author encourages the reader to skip around and read whatever may be helpful (unlike her magnum opus, The Crucifixion). By reading through one notices significant repetition of many of her themes. I’ve been preaching Christmas sermons for the past 40 years, and few of mine sound like any of hers. I found this collection challenging and rich, a substantive book that challenged my perceptions and gave much food for thought.
  • I can't believe can't deliver in 2 days and Target can. Not available in their retail stores, just online. You will want it NOW so you and any group you are in can discuss it beginning in pre-Advent, over the next 7 Sundays ending December 23. In other words, ideally you would start on November 11. But don't let that stop you. This is going to be a classic you can enjoy for years to come. I ordered it for the Adult Forum group at my church, not having much idea of what it would be. It arrived today. It is heavy, literally, and heavily footnoted and heavy with the experience and insights of the author. I have only read a small portion but am tempted go hole up somewhere and just dive in. I love that she invites us to pick and choose what appeals from the enticing Contents list. This book will have special appeal for Episcopalians, but anyone looking for a serious work on the subject should be able to appreciate it.
  • Once again the good reverend delivers a robust piece of Christian reflection and preaching. These sermons through the season of Advent are profoundly theological and convicting, as well as deeply unsettling. Rutledge pulls no punches in her preaching. This book will ruin the sentimentality associated with Advent for you - and you'll be much the better for it.
