A mixed-breed offspring of "Marley and Me" and "All Creatures Great and Small", "His Name was Brownie" is your next book for fun. Peopled with multiple Marley dogs (and Marla’s as well), nearly all readers will recognize their dog or cat, son or daughter, spouse—maybe even themselves— as the featured characters barrel their way through their laughable adventures. Collies and Irish wolfhounds bound through the pages; but they have many companions, including a tuxedo cat, a mastiff, a demented border collie, two Siamese cats, two twenty-five pound attack cats, the monkey from Hell, a Labrador retriever nicknamed “Blockhead†because of his habit of getting his head stuck in plastic milk cartons, black witch moths, and a bufo. Their escapades take them through beautiful areas of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Hawaii, before the clan finally lands in Wisconsin near the Wisconsin River. Dr. Judi Roller has been breeding and showing collies and Irish wolfhounds for many years, garnering AKC championships for her dogs and several group placements along the way. She has also enjoyed judging multiple AKC matches. Her previous book, "The Politics of the Feminist Novel," won an Outstanding Academic Book award; and she has published literary criticism as well as book reviews and occasional poems and a short story. Her B.A. cum laude was earned at Bowling Green State University; and her doctorate came from the University of Michigan, even though she is a home-grown Ohio State Buckeye, which became a challenge while she was teaching Freshman English during her graduate work at Michigan. Now retired from university administration, she has more time for dogs, golf, travel, bridge, and reading. Website is https//rivendellcolliesandirishwolfhounds.com for author blog and reader reviews.

"Brownie is a delightful book. It is an easy and relaxing read. Judi's stories about the animals she has had are entertaining, often funny. I also liked that she took us to different parts of this country and described her living situation so well that I could picture it in my mind. I enjoyed reading this book very much!!"

- BOBBIE GROTH, AUTHOR I couldn't put this book down from the moment I started it. As an animal lover myself I am always looking for funny, intelligent, cozy and straightforward books about life with dogs, cats, and other familiars! Judi Roller certainly provides that. Following the trajectory of her travels and her life, she tells us so many interesting and funny stories of the dogs and some cats, who have journeyed with her. It was laugh-out-loud material in many places--the kind where I had to shout to my husband, "Come and listen to this!" after which we'd both be laughing hard. What a wonderful book! (verified purchase). DR. DONNA BROWN, PhD, DUKE UNIV.; TAUGHT ANIMAL BEHAVIOR at NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE, Hilarious. So good. So well-written. Enjoyable read from beginning to end.
- I love this book. It is light hearted, engaging and fun to read. I enjoyed every second of it. As an animal lover, and the lucky former owner of a few wonderful Irish wolfhounds, I was reminded of all the wonderful encounters we have every day with all these special and gorgeous creatures. This book reminds us to be grateful to share our space with them. Hope there is a sequel ahead.
- Stumbled across this and instantly understood, and related to, the author's love of animals. I did think the writing was a bit erratic, and I would have liked more details, but I really enjoyed the book and the many adventures with animals. I will be recommending this book to my daughter, who reminds me so much of Judi.

- This is a well-written book full of hilarity. It is a must-read for pet-lovers, even those of us who don't have one. Grab this book; you'll love it!
- I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Dr. Roller’s stories made me laugh out loud, and filled me with amazement at the intelligence of her canine and feline friends. I really liked the way she organized the book, tracing her interaction with her animal friends through the course of her life and travels. She writes in an engaging and absorbing way, which makes you want to read the next chapter to see what is coming next. The way she writes also helps create an image of what she is describing, so you feel like you are watching a movie. I was touched by cat Wonder Woman, and what a drive to live after serious injury. The ingenious way that Dr. Roller came up with a way to pay for her surgery also blew me away – her brain was solving the problem while she slept. Now only did she figure out how to pay for it by refinancing her house, but she came out ahead by thousands of dollars. I am glad Dr. Roller included this story in her book – although not a funny incident, a very heart-warming one. If you want to read an uplifting, wonderful book about our animal companions, this is one to read and treasure!
