"As a newly adoptive mother, this story brings tears to my eyes every time I read it. Although our little girl from China did not spend time in a foster home, the storyline still applies to our daughter's life. When I read the story and look at my daughter, I am once again reminded how far she has come to be in our family and how fortunate she was for the wonderful care she received in the orphanage. The story is a positive reflection of her child's experiences prior to being adopted, and they are presented in a way that can be shared with other adoptive children. "Forever Mama" will be a tool we use with our daughter to openly discuss her life in China as she grows up. Thank you Melissa Johnston-Burnham for sharing your story with us!"

  • As a mother of two children adopted from China, I am so happy that a story like this has been written. While neither of my children have asked about "their story," I've struggled with the best way to discuss their time prior to them joining our family. With Forever Mama, it allows me to share the story and open dialog between myself and my son and daughter. The pictures are beautiful and the story is wonderful and very understandable to both young and older children alike. It has touched me so much, that I have purchased this book for a few more adoptive mamas and know that the story will help them to discuss a topic that many of us struggle with. Thank you, Melissa for writing a truly beautiful and inspiring story.
  • I purchased this book because I have an internationally adopted child. It turns out the book is beyond wonderful. It tells the story of a mommy explaining to the child all of the mommies she has had birth mother, foster mother, and forever mother. It is beautiful and heart warming and a great way to help open up the discussion with an adopted child.
  • Thank you for sharing, Krista Dolan! Excellent book. Important read for those of us whose children have experienced foster care and/or cleft/other health issues.
  • My son is 4.5 years old and we have several friends who are/have adopted so we have talked about adoption before. I really appreciated that this book was able to help my son see things from another child's perspective in a way my explanations have not. The book does a lovely job of talking through some of the complex feeling associated with adoption in a comforting and supportive way. On our second read through, I pointed out that while he was doing certain things here in our house at certain ages, she was with her birth mama, in the orphanage, with her foster mama, getting surgery, going to her forever mama, etc. I would recommend that other parents reading this to children without personal experience with adoption do the same because it seemed to make it more concrete for him.

My son and I had the honor of meeting the author and her daughter today. We were about to read this book together when a little girl said, "Oh, that's my book!" I asked her if she liked to read it, thinking she meant "mine" as in "my favorite." Her mom explained that it really IS her book. It added a whole different layer of meaning for both of us to really understand that this book is about a real little girl. Even as an adult (with a certain level of understanding that the story is true) it made the book so much more real and meaningful to meet her. The pictures really do look like them. -)
  • Forever Mama is an encouraging children's book that addresses the different roles mama's played in an adoptive child's life. This book addresses the first few years of a young child's life and answers questions the child had about her first years and who took care of her. The role of Birth mama, Foster mama and Forever Mama are very clearly defined and described to help the young child make the distinction.

The illustrations are beautiful and fitting for the story. They draw the reader in and add great visuals to the words being read. They show real emotions such as sadness through tears, excitement through big smiles and affection between the mom and daughter laying side by side and giving hugs.

Even though the book takes a journey through an array of emotions, it ends on a very positive note. The reader feels good knowing that adoption is forever and there will not be another "mama". What I really appreciate about this book is how the hard topics are clearly discussed, emotions are felt and put out in the open, yet it is still very positive and encouraging. I highly recommend this book to any family with an adoptive child. It will be a resource for our family to use for many years to come to open the dialogue and discussion of our adoptive child's life before we became Forever Family.

  • So many of us nowadays know someone who has been adopted. Before this story, I did not completely understand the process or how to clearly explain it to a child. This book makes sharing adoption stories with young children a delight. The drawings are vibrant and the way Melissa describes the different "mamas" in the story is so heartwarming. I wish everyone had so many "mamas" to love them! It makes the adoption process fun and loving and all children will delight in hearing how different family structures come to be. Love! Love! Love this book!
  • Melissa has written a touching and heartfelt story about a conversation we all have with our internationally adopted children sooner or later. This story is a beautiful way to discuss and provide information with our children in a safer way-- a story. And it addresses that deep-rooted fear of abandoned children that this family, this mama, isn't "forever". Such a lovely, lovely story, with illustrations that mirror our Gotcha Day pictures! Fabulous job, Melissa!!! -)
